At one time a Pennsylvania woman with a beautiful voice
chose to cover her plus size figure with some type of
free-flowing mumu. She wore it at home, where she earned
a living by offering voice lessons. She wore it outside,
in the garden or while shopping. She wore her most elegant
muumuu whenever she would sing at a wedding, or some other
special occasion.
This was before the stores had begun to offer a generous
selection of ladies plus size clothing. The woman’s
many simple muumuus took the place of todays casual
plus size dresses. Undaunted by the absence of woman’s
plus size sun dresses, this singer and teacher used
muumuus to de-emphasize her figure. She did not let
her figure disguise the beauty of her voice.
Since the woman’s home in Pennsylvania was not
close to the Atlantic Ocean, she did not miss the absence
of plus size beach dresses. Since she did not live near
Philadelphia’s posh Rittenhouse Square, she was
not in the market for trendy plus size woman’s
clothing.
This singer and teacher could have used a couple plus
size semi-formal dresses. Her efforts to find comfortable
but elegant muumuus did not always end with a purchase.
She often had to drive closer to the city, in order
to find suitable clothing for a singing engagement.
One summer she looked longer and harder than usual
for just the right sort of muumuu. She wanted to appear
especially elegant on one Saturday in August. On that
day she would sing at the wedding of one of her students.
It would not be a formal wedding, but as the teacher
of the brides this one Pennsylvania woman wanted to
look fabulous.
She might have thought that her voice brought the father
of the bride to tears. He did indeed have tears in his
eyes after the ceremony and reception. Those tears were
not, however, a response to the beauty of the song that
all had heard. The father hated saying goodbye to the
daughter with the equally beautiful voice.
Does the daughter now sing? Who knows? She is not the
member of any choir. She might sing to the sea life
in the Chesapeake Bay. She might sing to her dogs. Maybe
she has sung a tune for some neighborhood children.
She does not wear a muumuu. She does not wear plus size
dresses. She likes to wear jeans.
